Our Purpose
Diabetes is hard for everyone, especially kids. The increased burden of disease can result in depression, anxiety, chronic stress, and feelings of isolation.
However, living with diabetes also presents a unique potential for identity exploration and an increased sense of belonging. By engaging in the diabetes camp community, campers develop lifelong friendships strengthened by the bond of shared challenges. Campers benefit from increased resilience, enhanced critical thinking skills, and recognition that they can and will accomplish hard things. Not only does this experience reduce the psychological burden of living with diabetes, but it can also result in improved health outcomes including decreased risk of diabetes burnout and long-term complications.
Camps and retreats for children with Diabetes are expensive, and even with scholarships, the children need a lot of materials to attend. These materials can range from clothing, bedding, toiletries, towels, etc. These extra expenses prevent some families from sending their children to these medical camps. At the medical camps the children not only learn how to better manage their Diabetes, but they build a love for the outdoors, find a support network of others going through the same, and build life-changing friendships.
Memories Made is a nonprofit organization founded by former camp counselors with a mission to help kids with diabetes experience camp. Camp is for everyone, not just for those whose families have access to the funds, transportation, and/or time necessary to get to camp. Our goal is to help as many kids as possible experience the benefits of diabetes camp by supporting families and removing barriers to access.
